5 reasons why you should participate to the CrossFit Open (or any competitions at your box)
Let’s face it. None of us is going to the Games this year (or maybe as a spectator). Does that mean we should not participate in the Crossfit Games Open ? You just started CrossFit a few months ago and don’t feel good enough to be part of the next local competition. Here are five reasons why you should still sign up or give it a shot.
1 – Competing is a great way to test your FITNESS
and see where you stand compared to others. Whether it’s the Open, a local competition or an online qualifier, you’ll get some tremendous experience out of it. From one year to another you will be able to see if you’re improving.
2 -You will push yourself further than in an everyday WOD.
When you have a judge and some people around you cheering it makes all the difference ! You’ll make sure you get that extra rep or finally get that daunting muscle up. You’ll find out that you have more in the tank than you actually think.
3 – You will get your weaknesses exposed.
We all have our goats (movements we suck at). We also have movements we just don’t like to work on. It’s pretty tempting to work around them. Or just to not show up at the box when you see burpees on your box’s website (busted, we know who you are!!).
Or you may just not be aware of them because you never worked on them. Maybe your gym is not programming this special movement either. In a competition there is no place to hide.
4 – You will perform the movements as you should
Having a judge counting for you and checking that you do the movements as required is a great opportunity for you. We often see people on top of the whiteboard at the gym, they go faster and heavier than every one else when no one is watching. But suddendly everything falls apart when a judge is around… (we all have someone like that in our gym) !
5 – Last but not least : You’ll be part of a community.
To me it’s the most important. Nobody f***ing cares if you ‘re ten kilos overweight or if you suck at handstand pushups. All that matters is the final hand check you give to eachother, right ? Just remember that you’ll earn respect from your attitude not your score ! You’ll get to compete beside some of your friends and share laughs, cheers and tears. At the box, we usually gather together the same day to perform the WOD. We discuss strategies and techniques to make sure we go through it as smooth as possible. The ones who finished first give a quick feedback to the ones that are about to start. That’s the whole CrossFit philosophy.
